3-Day Scotland Itinerary: See the Best of Scotland

May 22, 2025

Scotland is a beautiful country full of experiences to be had and sights to see. While three days is not enough to see it all, you’d be surprised how much you can fit into a short holiday without feeling too overwhelmed.

To make the experience streamlined and enjoyable, we’ve taken the liberty of putting together a comprehensive 3-day Scotland itinerary to make sure you get to see the best of Scotland. If you are staying longer, we also have a 7-Day itinerary with ‘must see’ things and a trip to St Andrews

As for accommodation, Cameron House is the ideal base to explore Scotland from. We are right on the banks of bonnie Loch Lomond, not too far from Balloch (which has great public transport connections), and easy to get to from both Glasgow and Edinburgh airports.

We have a whole host of fantastic rooms available to be booked, a variety of restaurants on our resort to cater to all tastes, and a selection of exclusive activities available to be booked should you wish.

For those visiting Scotland for the first time, it is important to note:

  • Being able to drive a car, or being able to rent one, is the best option for seeing everything from our glens to our cities.
  • Our weather in Scotland can be unpredictable, so it is always best to carry waterproofs and some boots. If driving to remote areas it is sensible to pack some blankets, food, and water just in case! If you are unsure what to pack, our What to wear in Scotland guide should help.
  • The fastest way to get around, especially across longer distances, is the train network. If you have the option, taking the train will likely save time depending how far you need to travel.

Let’s get to the details:

Day 1: Exploring Loch Lomond

For your first day of enjoying Scotland you’ll want to keep it low key, simple, and easy. Depending how far you’ve travelled, you’ll likely be tired, so it makes sense to keep day one fairly local. The good news is that when staying with us at Cameron House, local means Loch Lomond!

The Trossachs National Park is an essential destination for anyone holidaying in Scotland. The banks of Loch Lomond are the subject of national songs and poems for a reason.

What your day one can look like:

Morning

  • Wake up and have a lie in, then catch a spot of breakfast (or even brunch) in one of our resort restaurants.
  • Go for a walk along the coastline near the resort and enjoy the scenery of Cameron Bay and Marina Duck Bay.
  • Or, alternatively, book one of our resort’s various recreational activities such as jet skiing, a speed boat trip, pony trekking, paddleboarding, and more!

Afternoon

  • Have lunch at the Cameron House resort. Why not try a different resort restaurant for a bite of lunch? From the Cameron Grill to The Clubhouse, we have all kinds of cuisines to try.
  • For the remainder of the afternoon, visiting Loch Lomond Shores shopping centre and Balloch Town is a great way to spend your time. There are all kinds of fun activities to try and interesting places to go such as, SEA LIFE Loch Lomond Aquarium, the Maid of the Loch, Balloch Castle Country Park, and maybe go on a Loch Cruise from Balloch.

Evening

  • Stop in for dinner with us at one of our resort restaurants. We have extensive dinner menus boasting all the best local produce for scrumptious Scottish dishes you won’t easily forget.

End the day with a spa treatment at the Cameron Spa.

Day 2: Visiting Edinburgh Castle

For your second day with us in Scotland, we’ll be exploring something that this nation is famous for the world over, our castles! There are so many different fortifications dotted around the country, from quaint ruins to castles still in full working order. Edinburgh Castle is a fine example of the latter.

Morning

  • Wake up to a wonderful breakfast with us – don’t miss our pancake station. Having a good meal is the best way to start a day of exploring.
  • Prepare transport to Edinburgh. There’s a few ways to do this. If you drive, you can hop in your car and go. If you plan on using public transport you’ll need to:
    • Arrange transport to Balloch. We can arrange for a taxi to take you from Cameron House.
    • Hop on the Glasgow train from Balloch.
    • Switch trains at Glasgow, and get on the Edinburgh Waverley express. Trains from Balloch stop at Glasgow Queen Street. You can change there for a direct train to Edinburgh Waverley.

Afternoon

  • Upon arrival in Edinburgh, there are plenty of great shops in and around Edinburgh Waverley station. There’s also a range of superb coffee shops and cafes lining Princes Street that are worth a quick pit stop for. Joining onto Waverley station itself is a small shopping centre (mainly a food court), if you feel like a grab and go style snack.
  • Edinburgh Castle is uniquely noticeable from almost anywhere in the city centre. However, some great vantage points for photos are:
    • St Cuthbert’s Steps and St Cuthbert’s Churchyard.
    • Princes Street. The full length of the street has a variety of spectacular viewpoints over the castle.
    • The Vennel Steps. This is a classic photo spot for the castle that sits at the top of a set of stairs.
    • Calton Hill. This viewpoint will not only show you the castle in all its glory, but the city it once ruled over too!
  • Edinburgh Castle Tour. If coming all the way to the East Coast for the castle, taking a tour is a must. The castle is open from 9:30pm to 6pm from April to September and 9:30pm to 5pm October to March and the last entry is one hour before closing time. We would recommend buying tickets in advance, as the number of tickets is limited and they are often sold out. Especially on holidays and weekends.
  • If you still have time left over in the afternoon, the Old Town is near to the castle and full of shops, cafes, restaurants, and history to explore.
  • Additionally, the National Museum of Scotland is nearby if you are into history and want to see more.
  • For the art lovers, the National Gallery of Scotland is also nearby the castle and is worth a look.
  • For Harry Potter fans, Victoria Street has two Harry Potter themed shops and the Elephant House where J.K. Rowling wrote the books is also here (it moved here after a fire at the original coffee house)

Evening

  • After a day of exploring Edinburgh a delicious meal awaits you at Cameron House. The only choice is what cuisine and atmosphere takes your fancy? For a more relaxed and reserved dinner, why not try La Vista? Or if you are in a more sociable mood, The Tavern?

Day 3: Whisky Tasting

A holiday in Scotland wouldn’t be complete without a whisky tasting or a distillery visit. Thankfully, there are plenty of distilleries to choose from and each have their own merits. If you don’t already have a distillery in mind that you want to visit, there are some great distilleries near Loch Lomond, such as:

  • Glengoyne Distillery
  • Drumbane Distillery
  • Deanston Distillery
  • Falkirk Distillery
  • The Clydeside Distillery (in Glasgow)
  • Littlemill Distillery

If you are leaning towards a road trip, then there are more options to consider (just be sure to have a designated driver):

  • Dalwhinnie Distillery
  • Oban Distillery
  • The Glenturret Distillery
  • Tullibardine Distillery
  • The Moffat Distillery
  • Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery
  • Ben Nevis Distillery

Morning

  • If going further afield, you’ll want to wake up nice and early and have some breakfast with us. Fuel up for the day ahead!
  • If staying relatively local then you can afford a lie in, followed by some brunch at one of our restaurants.
  • You’ll want to double check your driving route, and make sure you have everything set to go to your distillery of choice. If going quite far, be sure to bring some water, food, and blankets just in case.

Afternoon

  • Have a spectacular day exploring Scottish whisky at your distillery of choice.
  • Be sure to grab a bite to eat in the local area nearby. There are always small towns that’ll have local food for you to try.

Evening

  • Finish up a day of indulging in the Scottish whisky culture with a flavourful dinner prepared by our expert in-house chefs (and maybe add a dram or two).
  • If you didn’t have a spa experience on day one, your final evening with us is the perfect time to switch off and enjoy being pampered as Cameron Spa is open until 9pm, 7 days a week.
