UK Staycations Ideas

As holidays start to creep back onto the agenda, you might be thinking of taking the whole family away for a well-earned break. But have you considered leaving the passports at home and enjoying a staycation in the UK instead? How many times have you thought to add a UK location to your travel bucket list but never quite got round to visiting? With Brexit and the pandemic putting many travellers off leaving the UK, make this the year of the staycation and explore all that our beautiful country has to offer! We’ve listed our top 4 reasons to enjoy a staycation below – have a read and see if a staycation is for you this summer!

1. Reduced travel time

The excitement of heading to the airport soon wears off when you get there and realise that most air travel involves a significant amount of queuing, waiting around and suffering cramped conditions! With a UK staycation, you don’t need to worry about being at the airport for a specific time to check in your bags, then make sure you’re at the gate on time, or worry about queuing up for hours on end. Depending on where you decide for your staycation, you’ll likely have less of a journey time than if you were to travel on a plane, by the time you take into account time spent in the airport, the flight itself and transfer time to your resort. The best bit? You’ll arrive at your destination with more time to relax and enjoy the start of your holiday!
We’re not saying car travel is the only answer, many UK destinations are easily accessible by rail or by boat so explore the best option for your group. And if you’re travelling with kids, take a look at our blog for tips on keeping the kids occupied on a long journey. Hint: it involves lots of preparation and a great imagination!

2. You’re not limited by a luggage allowance

If you choose to travel by car, you don’t need to worry about packing light. Golf clubs? No problem! Enough clothes for any weather eventuality? Great! Bikes? A jet ski? Fantastic, as long as they all fit in the car!
The fact that you’re not limited to a certain amount of luggage (or those pesky liquid restrictions!) makes self-catering a great option for your staycation. You can pack up the car with your favourite food and drink, and head off happy that everyone will have a full tummy during the trip! Not only does this make it easier for people with special dietary requirements, it also helps you save some money. Perhaps to treat yourself and the family to a special activity during your trip?

3. The scenery

From Lands End, to John o’ Groats, the UK is home to some of the best scenery in the world! From rugged mountain landscapes, to mirror-like lakes, and stunning sandy beaches, you don’t need to venture far to experience Instagram-worthy scenery. Don’t believe us? Check out our favourite, Instagrammable spots from around Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park in our blog. All of these stunning places can be reached in less than an hour from our resort.

Want to try something different? Theme your staycation around something you love. A group of film buffs? Try exploring some of the UK’s most popular film locations. Here in bonnie Scotland, our stunning landscapes have played host to some major blockbusters including James Bond’s Skyfall, Harry Potter and of course, Mary Queen of Scots. Or perhaps history is more your thing? Why not make a castle trail and explore these historical landmarks!

4. The food and drink

The UK is famous for many delicious dishes and delicacies including fish ‘n’ chips, the traditional Sunday roast, Afternoon Tea and of course, if you’re in Scotland, expect to come across haggis, cullen skink, black pudding, or the infamous the deep fried Mars bar!
Did you know that the tradition of Afternoon Tea was actually invented in the UK? And what a tradition it’s grown to be! From deliciously warm scones served with jam and clotted cream, to intricate pastries and delightful finger sandwiches and mini-savouries, you’ll find a variety of afternoon teas served across the UK. The Boat House restaurant within the Cameron Lodges resort offers both Traditional and Champagne Afternoon Tea, as well as gluten free and vegetarian options.

The UK is also the birthplace of many of the world’s most famous drinks. From beer, to gin, and our national drink, whisky, you can be sure to find your favourite tipple when you’re on staycation. Even better, you can arrange to visit where it’s made. In Scotland, we’re proud of our rich whisky heritage and you’re never far from a distillery. Take a look at our distillery blog to find out which famous whisky brands are within easy distance of our resort. Within Loch Lomond & The Trossachs and nearby, you’ll also find plenty of breweries and gin distilleries to explore.

If you are planning a Scottish staycation this summer, consider Cameron Lodges. Nestled in the beautiful Scottish countryside, our self-catering resort on the western shores of Loch Lomond, has a range of 1, 2 3 and 4 bedroom properties which sleep up to 8 people.
