Planning a Perfect Corporate Team Building Getaway
May 22, 2025
What is the purpose of a corporate team building getaway?
A good corporate team building getaway is about giving your employees the space to decompress, as well as giving them the chance to foster good working relationships. It’s a great way to identify team member talents and build a company that understands its collective strengths and weaknesses. This is vital for any organisation, regardless of sector, to building and maintaining an efficient, cohesive workforce.

How to plan a great team building weekend away?
When you’ve decided you want to organise a team building weekend or a team building gateway of any length, there are some basic considerations about your people that you’ll need to take into account.
The first aspect to consider before the planning stage is the goal of the getaway. What do you want the end result to be? There are all kinds of goals you can set, but some common ones are:
- For relaxation. A relaxed team will produce excellent results.
- For team bonding. Have you recently expanded with new team members? Is it time to make sure everyone’s thoughts are aligned? Corporate team building getaways are a superb option to work on team bonding.
- Skills development. Is this perhaps a more formal corporate getaway? This could be a chance to allow your team members dedicated time to cross-pollinate skills and focus on upskilling any knowledge gaps.
- Boosting morale. Team building getaways are an excellent way to show your team you care about them. Maybe a huge project is finished and your team needs to blow off some steam. Whatever the scenario, team building weekends are great for decompression.
- Promoting team communication. Foster better ways of communicating with getaways that pose fun problems and challenges or games that involve teamwork. This can then translate into the day-to-day of the business after the fact!
This is by no means an exhaustive list, but having a goal in mind is a great way to properly assess takeaways from the trip.
The Basics
- How many people are you planning for?
- Do any of your team members have medical needs? (i.e. medicine required, for example epi-pen, dextrose?)
- Is what you have planned inclusive for everyone? (i.e. have you taken into consideration religious events, abilities etc.)
- Are there any specific dietary requirements for your team members? (i.e. vegans, vegetarians, any allergies)
- Is it feasible for their work-life balance? (i.e. do they have parental or caring duties?)
We’d always recommend making a sheet with each team member and their relevant information they’ve given you access to. This will help you visualise all their needs while ensuring nobody is overlooked.
Choosing A Venue
When you have a grasp on the basics and a firm understanding of what people can and cannot do, as well as a general idea of what people like and dislike for this kind of event, it’s time to start thinking about the getaway itself.
Ideally, you’ll want to select a venue, and you’ll want to make sure it is:
- Easy to get to and from.
- If you aren’t providing transport, a venue that is close to transport links.
- Has enough capacity for your full team.
- Has availability for bedrooms if you are planning a multi-day team building getaway.
- Has a variety of options for team building activities.
- Has a comprehensive menu to cater to all needs.

The Logistics
After the groundwork has been laid for your team building idea, it’s time to consider the logistics of how it’ll work.
When it comes to arranging team building getaways, you’ll need to decide if you are doing a day-trip or something a bit longer, maybe one or two nights. This will then determine how the logistics will work. That being said, the following will matter regardless of the length of your getaway:
- Are you arranging transport to and from the venue of choice? If not, have you got expense forms ready for travel expenses to and from the venue?
- Will there be a limit on luggage or items each member can bring?
- Have you got an itinerary prepared for everyone?
- If the event falls outwith work hours, will it be considered overtime? This also aligns with the activities themselves, and the goals of the retreat. If they are doing real world client work, you’ll need to think if compensation is appropriate or not.
As for the itinerary, you’ll need to consider:
- Event slots. What events are mandatory and what are optional (if it is a longer getaway).
- Are there time periods gapped out for downtime?
- Are breakfast, lunch, and dinner schedules strict? Do they need to be followed?
- What are the rules for downtime? Can your team members leave the premises (if it is a longer stay). If so, what are the rules for this?
