Munro Mountains In Loch Lomond & The Trossachs

The Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park is one of the most beautiful places in Scotland, and it’s home to a number of Munro mountains. This guide will take you through a brief history of the Munros and discuss some of the biggest mountains in this area. Read on for all the information you need for bagging a Munro in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, including the best routes, safety measures, and gear recommendations.

What Is A Munro?

There are an astounding 282 Munros in Scotland with 19 more over the border in England and Ireland. A Munro is a Scottish mountain that has a summit of over 3000 feet. The best known Munro in Scotland is Ben Nevis, or Beinn Nibheis, which has a height of 4,411ft (1,345m), making it the highest mountain in the British Isles.

These mountains were named after Sir Hugh T. Munro, the first man to catalogue them in 1891 – known as Munros Tables. In order for a mountain to be classed as a Munro, it must be over 3000 feet, as stated above, and also be recognised on the Scottish Mountaineering Club’s official list of Munros. Interestingly enough, Sir Hugo T. Munro was a founding member of the organisation at its creation in 1889. As a testament to his fantastic work, given the limited tools and technology of the time, the list has only been revised four times since its creation – in 1921, 1953, 1981, and 1997. Sir Hugo T. Munro was not a particularly athletic man, with short limbs, no particular muscle strength and small feet but, what he lacked physically, he made up for in mettle. With enough passion, determination and drive, anyone can bag themselves a Munro.

Equipment And Gear For Climbing A Munro

Having the correct equipment when climbing a mountain can be the difference between life and death, so it’s imperative that you make sure your pack is stocked with all the essentials and that you’re wearing the correct gear. Conditions can change rapidly on a climb, so you have to ensure that you’re prepared for whatever the great Scottish countryside throws at you. Below is our list of all the essentials for a successful climb.

Clothing

  • Boots (with ankle support and soles which will grip on rock, grass and mud)
  • Waterproof jacket (with hood)
  • Waterproof over trousers (lightweight)
  • General trekking trousers (not jeans or cotton material)
  • Thermal top
  • Fleece top
  • Gaiters (not always essential)
  • Warm hat
  • Gloves or mitts

GEAR

  • Rucksack (about 35 litres)
  • Compass
  • Map (waterproof or in waterproof case)
  • Watch
  • Torch (preferably a head torch)
  • Food & Drink
  • Emergency Survival Bag
  • Whistle
  • First Aid Kit
  • Mobile Phone
  • A bag for rubbish
  • Midge Repellent (when in season)
  • Suncream (for summer months)

Some may wish to bring water purifying tablets, but many are happy to drink from the mountain streams or pack their canteens with snow (make sure to allow it to melt first, so you do not lower your body temperature dramatically). Footwear is arguably one of the most important aspects of your gear, so make sure you break them in well before your climb to avoid issues. If you plan on winter hiking, ensure you bring an ice axe and crampons for a safe climb. It’s important you do your research before attempting a climb in the snow or ice as visibility is low and the snow can hide many hazards such as pits and broken sections.

In the event of an emergency, call 999, ask for Police and then Mountain Rescue.
