Meet Robbie King: From Aspiring Pro to Head Golf Coach at Cameron House

June 18, 2025

Coaching with Heart on the Shores of Loch Lomond

Robbie King’s journey in golf is a powerful example of passion, perseverance, and purpose. His story began at Dumbarton Golf Club where he first picked up a golf club at the age of 11. What followed was nearly a decade of competitive play, representing Scotland and earning a +2 handicap at his peak. Since qualifying with the PGA in 2015, Robbie has committed himself to helping golfers of all levels improve. With a deep understanding of golf swing mechanics, biomechanics, and performance coaching, he now leads instruction as Head of Coaching at The Carrick Course, one of Scotland’s premier championship courses.

Robbie shares how he got started in golf, the mentors who have shaped his philosophy, and what makes golf coaching at Cameron House such a unique and rewarding experience. Plus, he shares some tips for your game and playing The Carrick Course.

“Whether it’s helping someone simply get the ball airborne for the first time or supporting a more experienced player in gaining distance and curing their slice, what I enjoy most is seeing someone leave with a clear understanding of what they need to work on and the confidence that they have the tools to make it happen. That’s what drives me every day.”

A Life Shaped by Golf

Like many young golfers, I dreamed of playing the game professionally. When that path didn’t quite work out, I found myself stepping away from golf and working in car sales instead. But as fate would have it, one day I sold a car to a former Director of Golf at Cameron House – and that chance meeting brought me back into the world of golf, this time on the operations side of the business.

After about a year, I decided to take the plunge and join the PGA to gain a formal qualification. That’s when I discovered my true passion: coaching. I qualified in 2015 and have been coaching ever since. In 2018, I was proud to become Head Teaching Professional, and I’ve never looked back. Coaching has allowed me to stay connected to the game I love, while helping others improve and enjoy their own journey in golf. It’s incredibly rewarding, and I’m excited to keep growing and learning alongside my students.

Learning from the Best

Very early on in my coaching journey, I realised that the best way to improve was to learn from those who were already at the top of the game. That mindset has taken me to some incredible places around the world – Stockholm, Copenhagen, Dublin, London, Florida, and Virginia – where I’ve had the chance to work with and learn from some of the most respected coaches and researchers in golf. My first mentor was Scott Cowx, a brilliant coach from Canada who’s been a huge influence on my development. I’ve also learned a great deal from Andreas Kali, a highly respected coach, as well as fellow Scot Hugh Marr, and U.S.-based educators Terry Rowles and Mike Adams – both incredible coaches with a wealth of knowledge and experience.

As my coaching evolved, I became increasingly interested in the science behind the swing – particularly physics and biomechanics. I’m now a Level 2 Certified Biomechanics Instructor under Dr. Kwon’s programme, and I’m Force and Motion Certified through the work of Dr. Sasho MacKenzie and Dr. Phil Cheetham. Most recently, I’ve had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Mark Bull and Dr. Mike Kay to deepen my understanding of human anatomy and movement patterns in golf.

What’s been truly rewarding is how this journey has allowed me to travel the world, meet some amazing people, and keep learning – all for the love of the game and the desire to help others on their own golfing journeys. It’s a privilege to do what I do.

Career Highlights

  • Reaching the finals of The Faldo Series, winning both the Dumbartonshire County Boys Matchplay and Strokeplay titles, being part of the victorious Scottish Schools team against England, and even sharing a win on the Scottish Junior Tour.
  • Working with Becky Morgan, a fantastic golfer with over 25 years at the top level of the women’s game. For someone of Becky’s calibre to put her trust in me was a huge honour. I’ll never forget that Becky had mentioned me live on Sky Sports. That was a surreal and special moment.
  • Cameron Meldrum was selected for the Scotland Under-14 Training Squad. It’s been fantastic to work with Cameron in the early stages of his golfing development. If he continues to pursue golf, there’s no telling how far he could go.

Coaching at The Carrick

Having grown up locally, I would pass the Cameron Club every day on my way to caddy at Loch Lomond Golf Club. I watched the resort being built from the ground up and always dreamed of one day getting the chance to play the course. To now have the opportunity to work here and be part of such an incredible facility has truly been one of the greatest opportunities in my career. There’s something special about being part of a place you’ve admired from a young age.

A typical day is incredibly varied, which is one of the things I enjoy most about the role. I might start by working with someone completely new to the game, helping them take their very first steps in golf, and later be coaching a professional aiming to compete at the highest level. My sessions can range from improving movement patterns and technique on the range to refining course strategy and decision-making out on the course. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to make a real difference in a golfer’s development.

Words of Wisdom

One of the most common mistakes I see amateur golfers make is having the wrong conceptual understanding of two key fundamentals: where the club should contact the ground, and what influences the ball’s starting direction.

First, many golfers don’t realise that when the ball is on the ground, the club should make its first contact with the turf after striking the ball. This simple concept can have a dramatic effect on a player’s movement patterns. Once a golfer truly understands and works toward this, their swing often begins to improve naturally.

Second, it’s crucial to understand that the clubface, not the swing path, primarily determines the ball’s initial starting direction. For years, it was widely believed that swing path played the dominant role—but thanks to technology like the TrackMan launch monitor, we now know that clubface angle at impact has a much greater influence. Understanding this can lead to more effective practice and better ball control.

Take Your Game to the Next Level

The hardest part is often identifying the right area of your game to work on. Many golfers spend hours hitting ball after ball on the driving range, when in reality, working on their putting or short game might have a bigger impact on lowering their scores. My advice is to work with a coach who takes a holistic view of your game—not just your swing technique, but also your course management, practice habits, and mental approach. That broader perspective can make all the difference in reaching the next level.

Playing The Carrick: Robbie’s Tips

My number one tip for playing The Carrick is to do everything you can to stay out of the bunkers. All of our bunkers are traditional pot bunkers, and they can be extremely punishing—especially the fairway bunkers, which are true hazards. With the sheer number of them across the course, it’s tough to complete a round without finding at least one. Good course management and smart club selection can go a long way in avoiding them and keeping your score on track.
